Upright meaning

The fire is tired but not gone. The Nine of Wands asks for endurance, wise guarding, and respect for scars that still stand watch.

Reversed meaning

Guarding may have become isolation, suspicion, or refusal to heal. The wall that saved you may now be blocking help.

Lore

The Nine of Wands is the night watch after many trials, when the sentinel knows the sound of danger but still keeps a lamp for dawn.

In play, it appears when the player is near the end of a gauntlet, carrying evidence of what happened, and deciding how much caution is still useful.
